The Miracle of Mindfulness:
Introduction to Vipassana (Insight) Meditation
with John Stevens

Saturday, May 10, 2008
2:00-4:30pm

$40

Meditation practice is at the heart of many spiritual traditions, and often is cultivated as part of one’s yoga practice. In Vipassana practice, we develop a deep awareness of all sensations felt in the body, the emotions and in the mind. We learn to be wisely present with pleasures and pains, joys and sorrows, our emotions, thoughts, and all our psychological conditioning. This mindfulness begins to reveal a presence of mind, a peaceful quality which is the wellspring of our wisdom, compassion and equanimity. It often seems miraculous that such qualities exist alongside our anger, stress, or self-centeredness.

Using Mindfulness practice we will learn to cultivate these qualities, so that in the moments that we are assailed with stress or suffering, we can find on our inner resources, and stop perpetuating the things that cause us pain. Instead we bring forward those things that bring us joy and happiness. These practices are developed in all postures: sitting, standing, walking and lying down.

About John
John Stevens brings experience from 19 years as a Buddhist monk in the Theravadan tradition in monasteries in Thailand and England. Presently, he is a member of the Teachers Council of the Insight Meditation Community of Washington. He is also a qualified and practicing Craniosacral Therapist.

Not just for the mother, this workshop will explore mutually beneficial sequences that reduce anxiety and stress, while preparing both partners for the birthing experience and the arrival of baby.

In this couple’s workshop, you’ll learn:
* how to create daily “Fetal Love Breaks” - meditative opportunities to connect with your child,

* restorative yoga poses and breathing exercises to create a feeling of space in the body and mind

* reflexology and pressure points to address headaches, constipation, and sciatic pain, and

* touch applications that release the body's natural pain killers - endorphins, serotonin and GABA.

This restorative event is for the prenatal family to receive and relax - to soften into the amazing (and often intense) experience of prenatal parenting.

Backbends & Twists
with Ellie Gompert

Saturday, June 21, 2008
2:30-5:00 pm
$40

register

While the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of yoga are countless, backbends and twists are particularly potent and powerful. When practiced in combination, backbends and twists compliment and support one another to promote health, vitality, transformation, and joy.

This flowing vinyasa practice will thoroughly open the body and prepare the mind for deep twists and backbends, and will allow plenty of time to explore the poses.

Backbends
Backbends tone, strengthen, and open the heart center, cultivating health, spontaneity, energy, freedom, and compassion. They increase circulation and promote healthy functioning of the lymph nodes, increase oxygen intake and clean out carbon dioxide from the lungs, and they condition and tone the abdominal organs and muscles. With regular practice, backbends will tone and strengthen the spine and nervous system, improving the mind/body connection and encouraging the release of fear and vulnerability.

Twists
Twists neutralize and increase flexibility in the spinal column and stimulate the spinal nerves. While toning the abdomen, they cleanse, nourish, and rejuvenate the internal organs, tissues, and muscles
through compression-and-release, which floods the area with fresh blood. They directly affect the area of the body associated with Manipura chakra, which promotes the distribution of prana (vital
energy) throughout the body, effecting total health and vigor and fostering strong and balanced will power.

This workshop is geared towards intermediate to advanced students, but is open to all levels, and modifications will be given.

Your Practice with Props with Debby Cook

Saturday, June 28, 2008
2:00-4:00 pm
$35

Yoga is not about judging. Yet, we often look at props as unnecessary or indicative of weakness. Consider opening your mind to the ways props can enhance, deepen, and even expand your asana practice.

The use of blocks, blankets, straps, walls, and even chairs gives those with normal flexibility limitations an opportunity to access a wider range of yoga postures. Even very flexible people can find new ways of opening with a well-placed block or rolled up yoga mat.

Props are also crucial in helping to prevent joint dislocations and overstretching, and lend support while healing from injuries. They can also help overcome your fears of more challenging poses, or simply reduce fatigue to help you develop grace and poise.

In this 2-hour workshop, explore a variety of ways to use props to support proper and safe alignment and to facilitate deeper openings in your yoga practice.
This workshop is open to students of all levels.
